FAIL
lyssachan @ 05:33pm
I can't believe it's been so long since I last remembered to update this! I am complete and utter fail. I have a reason, though: we moved the wedding up.
So I am now getting married on Halloween. That's in 27 days. So I'm basically writing an update to say "I'm not going to be updating for a while." The wedding website I made is here - once the wedding happens, we'll update it with pictures and everything.

Another Update
lyssachan @ 12:19pm
I should call these the State of the Lyssa Address because they're so damned infrequent. Anyway! I somehow survived 2009 though in retrospect I have no idea how. Actually no, I do: Mario. We've now passed the six month mark and let me tell you, it's really awesome. I try not to gush too much though, because I know that a lot of my friends are single and bitter(ish) about it, and I feel... I think it might be termed Survivor Guilt after being single for so long and then meeting someone wonderful.
Anyway. Work is kind of horrible because of the economy and a number of other horrible factors that require me to roll back a week of vacation and generally work my ass off when I'm not getting paid for it. I'm starting to feel really crowded with it right now because there's a lot going on this week and I just don't have time to focus on it because we're getting Comcast installed in the house on Saturday and I feel like I need to be at home cleaning every second of every day but I would much rather be spending time with Mario or writing but instead I find myself forced to work extra hours and that's neither productive nor fun.
In other news: I'm writing again! Like, for realsies! Not that RP and plot-writing isn't real writing, but I'm writing something on my own that could actually maybe sell if it weren't so patently ridiculous. But I don't even care about that, I just really enjoy the need to write that I'm feeling. Like, it distracts me at work and while I covered a register break last night I was scribbling the story down on a post-it. I haven't done that since back in my very first job at the movie theater - back when "The Plan" was to just work a crappy little part time job until I sold some writing and could start to earn a living that way. Back before real life swallowed me whole and I was dragged kicking and screaming into Retail Hell. Before I suddenly stopped noticing that my part time job had a 401k and could accurately be termed "a career."
Anyway. I just felt like sharing this with someone, but most of the people I talk to are still asleep, including my boyfriend who slept through me writing in bed for two hours before I decided typing would be faster. If anyone would like to hear me gush about my ridiculous Steampunk/Pulp Sci-Fi hybrid, feel free to hit me up.
This is not a coherent update because I am too rushed with it. I made a "resolution" that I would write something every day and so far I have not broken it. True, sometimes it's a sentence I scribble on a post-it at 12:05 in the morning, but whatever: I'm writing. And it's starting to change how I think which is great - I need to get back to that. I'm working on a thing set at Miskatonic University which, if it doesn't suck horribly, might turn into a series of teen books maybe kind of sort of. I doubt they'd sell, though: if it doesn't have sparkly vampires or spoiled teenagers in it, no one wants to read it apparently. Fucking Gossip Girl and Twilight, man.
Anyway. I'm gonna get back to writing and stuff. Hit me up on AIM or Facebook if you like: I'm lyssachan on both.

Still Here
lyssachan @ 01:37pm
Quick update time:
I have a boyfriend and we've been officially dating since July 15th. We are madly in love and I don't care who says it's too soon or whatever. I am ridiculously happy and we are good for each other and it is new and exciting and wonderful.
I still have a job and my store is still in business but it's still not making a lot of money. Please buy books from me - feel free to return them in Freehold or North Brunswick.
I have a new laptop that is freaking gorgeous and amazing and I love it to pieces. I have since gotten rid of my desktop and am completely mobile now.
I play World of Warcraft on a PvP server called Scilla. I rolled a Blood Elf Paladin because I'm anewb girl.
My house is still messy but I now have renewed motivation to clean it. Unfortunately I also have less time that I actually spend here, so that makes it tricky...

Quasi-monthly update time!
lyssachan @ 11:47am
So I failed spectacularly to update in June. I'm in a weird place right now - like, as in, today. I feel really out of touch with things - like I feel like I'm disconnected from work and RP and general online stuff which is weird. Also I haven't written in like forever so that's frustrating. But I'm feeling kind of ridiculously happy right now.
Possibly because I might have a boyfriend? ( I am Jill's Lisa Frank notebook full of heart shaped doodles.Collapse )
This post is really scattered. I just wanted to organize some thoughts. Work is... well. ( You are not your job. You're not how much money you have in the bank.Collapse )
And then there's my online life which, as you can see, I have been neglecting. ( I am Jack's Internet AddictionCollapse )
Anyway I'm procrastinating a lot and I have to write up this scary e-mail and send it out, then head over and shop. But to wrap things up, here's a Public Service Announcement from your friendly neighborhood retail employee. If you're at your local Barnes & Noble and you need help finding something (and you shouldn't feel embarrassed if you do, we move things around so much I even get turned around in my own store sometimes) there are people who can help you find what you're looking for. And if you can't find one of those people wandering around on the floor? That's okay. Go to the customer service desk - there's usually a big sign over it that says customer service. Go to the desk - and wait. Please understand that we don't want to keep you waiting - we know that it's frustrating to have to wait when you just have a simple question and you just want a little direction and we really DO want to help you.
But we're probably helping someone else. Odds are good we're helping four other people because maybe the person making the schedule at your local Barnes & Noble is 400 payroll hours in the hole and hasn't been able to schedule more than one person to be on the sales floor on a given day. Maybe the person at the customer service desk is actually the Kids person who is out there to cover a break because the manager is ringing at the register or in the Cafe and can't be out there to help you find your book. And please understand that our customer service standard is that we will physically TAKE the customer TO the section and put the book IN THEIR HAND. If we don't do this, we get fired. And the stores are sometimes big, and it's a pain in the ass to go from customer service all the way to the Knitting section to then try and find one copy of a tiny paperback pattern book so that we can put it into the hands of a customer (who will then say "Oh, it's 19.99? I'll just get it Online" and leave it on a Cafe table 3 hours later) but we'll do it. Every time. And when it's your turn to ask for a book? We'll do it for you too.
So if you don't see someone immediately at the desk, please just wait. We'll be back - we promise! Granted, if you're standing there for like 10 minutes1 like a chump, ask someone at the register to page someone to the desk - it's possible the jerk we've scheduled for there is dicking around flirting with a cute girl in Sci-Fi in which case we'll write him up. Seriously. He's a douche.
1 Note: I mean ten real minutes, not the "God, this is taking forever!" ten minutes that is roughly a minute and a half of actual time. Seriously, get a watch.

Dispatches from the front.
lyssachan @ 07:25pm
I am cleaning the upstairs so I can move myself up there. This is something I've been talking about for, no exaggeration, 6 years. Maybe more. I think it's depression more than anything that's been stopping me but whatever: the point is that I'm doing it now.
And it's going to take me a month and a half.
( Here's the thing about my house...Collapse )
But I'm going to keep at it - I have audio books and 'sing loudly along with your favorite songs' music loaded on my iPod and I'm going to clean this room and then I'm going to move into it and then my mom's going to move into my old room and I'm going to move my computer into her current room. And then I'm going to set up my PS3 and my television and my computer and my surround sound speaker up in my new room and everything is going to be awesome.
For now, though, it's awful.
For fun, I'm keeping a running tally of all the shit from my past that I've unearthed:
( And here it isCollapse )

Call of Bat-thulhu
lyssachan @ 10:08pm
So today was spent planning out my eventual move to the upstairs where I will be taking up two rooms. Hopefully this will happen in 2 weeks when I will be on vacation and can then enjoy my new big-ass TV and the PS3 which I plan to buy with my tax refund. I've also been looking over Call of Cthulhu stuff with Paul, watching Dark City and generally bumming around. Earlier, he had linked me to a write-up of Dark City as an RPG campaign for Call of Cthulhu, and we also looked at a version of The Mummy. Both translate well because of the inherent pulpiness and I got to thinking that a librarian is really a good choice for an investigator. This naturally got me thinking about badass librarians. Which naturally got me thinking about Barbara Gordon.
Which then got me creating a big write-up of how Batman could be re-imagined as a 1920s Call of Cthulhu type setting.
Before I share, I'll just point out that it's in its infancy - I literally just finished it and haven't refined it or anything like that. And it's surprisingly girl heavy, because oddly enough there isn't a lot of room for male characters in a world dominated by the world's biggest alpha male: Batman. I did my best.
( Batman, Call of Cthulhu styleCollapse )
( Further thoughtsCollapse )
I'd like to incorporate more Mythos in the future, but for right now I need to get to bed. Feel free to leave thoughts - especially the mythos-inclined on my FList.

Dear World
lyssachan @ 06:00pm
Dear World,
If you have not yet seen the new Star Trek movie.
Please do so.
IMMEDIATELY.
Love,
Me.
So it's been about a month and I feel like I should update. I think I'm on the tail end of my seasonal depression which is good. Still feeling a bit frustrated with life in general but getting better. Work is a lot more like work now than it's ever been in recent memory but I'm coping - we just had inventory last night which was super fun, but not really.
On the up side, I keep getting inspiration for writing projects. Whether or not I actually see them through is another matter entirely, but we can always hope. I did manage to start a screenplay for Scriptfrenzy so that was fun. My interests at the moment vary between Zombies and Steampunk which, really, aren't too compatible for the most part - at least not for me. Steampunk is all about fancytalk and steamships, zombies are more about conformity and the modern age.
I sound pretentious and awful right now but whatever: I'm sleepy, I'm allowed.
Anyway just me checking in to assure you all that I'm not dead. And hoping to write another Lyssa Watches Movies so You Don't Have To for Hard Rock Zombies. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

Lyssa Watches Movies so You Don't Have To: Twilight.
lyssachan @ 09:49pm
I finally did it! - my tl;dr review of Twilight is here in case you wanted to read it. It's very very long and I didn't want it to be but I wanted to try and convey the pace of the fucker.
Please check out the other reviews Sylwia (mostly) and I wrote for that one.

Lyssa Watches Movies So You Don't Have to: DARK HONEYMOON
lyssachan @ 07:10pm
I haven't done one of these in a while, but the upcoming ScriptFrenzy has me thinking of movies and about eleven minutes into this movie I started to realize that it as something I needed to review - otherwise people wouldn't believe me. I'll preface my review by explaining that the only reason I wanted to rent this movie was because it stars my favoritest actress ever, Lindy Booth. You may know her (but probably don't) from such films as the Dawn of the Dead remake in 2004, Wrong Turn and a favorite of mine Cry_Wolf. She was also on The 4400 and played the Pizza Girl on October Road. She was amazong in Cry_Wolf and I've been stalkerishly following her career. So when I discovered a Lindy Booth movie I hadn't heard of, I decided to rent it.
Unfortunately for me, Dark Honeymoon is not bad in the way that I enjoy. Dark Honeymoon is just. plain. bad. I actually debated whether or not to review it since (as
harald387 pointed out) that would mean watching the whole thing. Ultimately, though, I decided that I needed to review it as a public service. If you were curious to know what happened, better that you should hear it here instead of watching the movie yourselves.
BE WARNED: This review may be deceptive! By reading the review, you will be seeing the movie in your imagination and you won't get the full experience of bad acting, awkward script and poor production value. You may start to believe that this movie is good enough to watch. Do Not Be Fooled! STAY AWAY!
Okay, so after that: I've actually changed my mind. This movie was TOO TERRIBLE TO BE MOCKED. It's not that it was 'so bad it's good' it's that it was fucking terrible. Awful dialogue, phoned in performances and completely awful pacing. Basically, skip it. Even my love for Lindy Booth and the crazy character she plays can't make this movie worth watching. Poor Kevin got a copy so we could mock it together and I still owe him an apology.
I plan to watch Twilight soon, though, so there's that to look forward to. It won't be for a few days at least, though: in the mean time if you are craving a Lyssa Watches Movies review, here's a link to the past ones, partially for my own reference:

Adventures In Real Life ("Hard Conversations")
lyssachan @ 11:48am
This week I've had my first taste of the Real World as a Grown-Up.
( It kind of sucksCollapse )
And even though money is tight and the thought of the debt that my mother and I are in due to home repairs and things of that nature astonishes and chills me? I went shopping last night. I bought a book and 2 movies and spent $30 in my store. Part of it was due to retail therapy - I am in a dark place and I feel bad and when I feel bad I have 2 options: Mess With My Hair or Buy Something. Well I cut about 6 inches off my hair two nights ago and it didn't help, so I picked up some things at the store and paid cash to avoid eventual interest rates. And on the way home, I got McDonald's from the drive through because I had skipped lunch and needed to clear some things off my TiVo (the contract of which I will not be renewing when it comes due this summer).
Later today, my mother and I are going to be turning in the cable box - not because we're giving up TV or trying to cut back, but because we've upgraded ourselves to digital cable. And not renewing TiVo is just because we've signed up for a DVR with the cable company instead. And after we do that, we're going to Best Buy and we're going to price HDTVs - a sale starts tomorrow and she's going to pick one up for about $400. And when I get my income tax money back? I'm going to get a PS3 and some Blu-Ray - and I'll probably pay a little more and get them through Gamestop (which my company owns) and my store rather than bargain hunt.
Because I know that my store isn't the only one with a daunting sales plan. I am not alone in this - we are a nation unified by debt and unrealistic expectations. And right now we are a nation of people who are tightening their belts and being frugal - and this is reality, this is necessary. But if people stop buying things like books (which, let's face it, are a luxury item) then my store stops making money. If my store stops making money, it has to cut corners. Maybe we'll start keeping shorter hours at the store. Maybe we'll have to close our music department. Maybe when I'm doing the April schedule, I have to cut so many corners that I have to have 3 "hard conversations" with people.
So even if it hurts me - even if it's just a drop in the proverbial bucket - I'm going to keep spending money. I'm going to buy things not just to make myself feel better but to maybe do what I can to help people make their own sales plans. It's not much and it may not make a difference - but I think that if enough people think like I do, maybe it will make a difference. Maybe it will help. So I don't know about you guys, but I plan to keep spending money in my store and at Gamestop and Best Buy and McDonald's.
And I'm going to supersize.

6. No cheating and doctoring your list to make yourself look cooler than the person you took this from
I reserve the right to skip tracks that are audiobooks (I have a lot) but other than that, I won't cheat. Also, I'm including a lyric from each that is funny/ironic.

And since most of those were boring and instrumental, I'm doing it again with different rules: this time I will skip audio books and instrumental songs so that I get stuff with lyrics.

HDTV
The Force Unleashed
Mirror's Edge
BSG 4.0
Things standing in the way of my consumerist dream:
Needing to get a tooth extracted and a spacer put in
Being told that I will in fact not be getting a raise this year
Needing to pay off my credit card debt from this past Holiday Season
Things completely unrelated to commerce/being a capitalist h0r:
I have a story idea that is cheesy and lame and awful and I am absolutely thrilled and I plan to cherish, nurture and love it fiercely and violently.

CD Mixes
lyssachan @ 02:24am
I realized that some of the songs I was hearing in the car weren't songs I was hearing on my iPod and thought it would be a good idea to make sure everything was burned onto the comp. In the process, I discovered some mix CDs I had made for the times when I worked in receiving and could put on my own music, and thought some of you might appreciate the lists. Also I wanted to keep them handy somewhere to eventually be recreated on iTunes - I tend to play all my CDs/playlists on shuffle, but for these particular ones, I actually went out of my way to make the flow work sometimes. BEGIN!

Happy New Year!
lyssachan @ 01:02pm
So. I'm not dead yet, though I haven't checked livejournal since my last entry which, for those of you playing the home game, was a month and a half ago. For future reference: I will be virtually incapacitated (that is to say, incapacitated in the virtual worlld) from about mid-November until January every year for as long as I work retail.
In particular, this was a bad holiday week for me. Assistant Store Manager means working 6 days a week in the 3 weeks leading up to and including Christmas week. And the fact that Christmas was on a Thursday this year means that I had a nice run of 7 days in a row leading into it. This was followed by a run of 4 days in a row right AFTER it. When you consider the fact that those days involve 8-9 hours of running around, setting up tables and helping customers non-stop because we are ridiculously busy? It adds up to a very exhausted Lyssa.
But! I had off the last 2 days, and next week I get 3 days off and then the week after that I'm on VACATION! Very excited. I'm going to focus on RP and do a lot of cleaning here at the house. Mostly, though, I'm going to NOT WORK.

HP Lovecraft Historical Society
lyssachan @ 03:07pm
NaNo, I have almost entirely given up on. I got a lot farther this year than I did last year, but I just keep getting way too sidetracked in the middle of it - happens every year. So alas, Steampunk Star Wars (rewritten so that Anakin is completely written out because I am blasphemous like that) will have to remain the product of my derranged imagination.
Instead, I've renewed my interest in HP Lovecraft and the Cthulhu Mythos and spent most of last night researching. In the process, I have discovered The HP Lovecraft Historical Society which, I must sya, is fantastic. Their adaptation of Call of Cthulhu is totally awesome - they made it as a silent movie, adapting it to the screen in the way it would have been done during the time it was published. I haven't seen many adaptations, but I have to say: the movie's really great so all you Mythos buffs should check it out.
They're doing Whisperer in the Dark next - and since that was published in the 30s, it's gonna be "a talkie" - the trailer's out on youtube and it looks great.
Mostly, I love how awesome and funny they are. The behind the scenes from Cthulhu was highly amusing: it was silent so the actors didn't really have lines: they would say something and then the title card reveals the lines, so they could make up anything. So during the segment where the artist Wilcox is relating his dreams to the professor, he was just making shit up and as the takes wore on, the stories got crazier and crazier. "And now I'm going [to the Dreamlands] - in the middle of the day! Lunchtime, I'm eating a hot dog and suddenly I'm dreaming! All I want are Sun Chips and all I see are the black skies of R'lyeh!"
Also, they have a ton of pdf props they created to go along with period stuff: newspaper templates, drivers licenses, diplomas and coursebooks for Miskatonic University, streetcar transfers from Arkham, Mass. - it's really great.
And for anyone wondering: yes, I am planning to use part of the Mythos at Gaslight. Prepare yourself!

Dream, Work, NaNo, Still Alive
lyssachan @ 12:00am
So last night I had a dream that my group of CW-Hottie Friends and I were traveling to Washington DC and in true horror movie fashion we were taken in by a Hostel-like group of Shady Characters who wanted to lure us there for evil. One of my friends was hot enough that she scored an invite to go hang out with a bunch of Beautiful People (almost all guys) who were having like a house party thing at this hotel and after exactly .3 seconds of being there I said "Well, as always the ugly chick goes home alone" and I started to leave but on the way out this cute Asian guy made eye contact and was like "Hi there" and I was like "Hi" and totally did an about face and followed him off somewhere where he woo'd me with (and I'm totally not kidding) an extensive collection of every comic, like, ever. Including a mint-in-bag collection of the first Age of Apocalypse trade paperbacks.
Of course, even though I was temporarily blinded by my geekdom, you'll be pleased to know that I was still 'with it' enough to uncover the murderous plot he and his friends were concocting.
In other news: changeover at work this week means good times for me. I'm on vacation next week (NaNo: Yay!) which means that today I need to write two schedules instead of one. I'm actually thinking of staying at work today to work on it without distracting myself.
Also: am getting sick. Which is exactly what I needed right now, btw. I know me: I'll suffer through it for the rest of this week and then get REALLY sick in time for vacation. Yayfun! In other news, the G-1 makes NaNo research from bed very easy. AND ALSO AWESOME.
EDIT: This was written last night. Today I worked 16 hours. So, you know: there's that.

So...
lyssachan @ 12:58pm
What's the best way to follow up your 14-hour day?
Getting your period. Also, I forgot to take home the stuff for the schedule last night, so I had to go back to the store to pick it up. The closing crew last night left the Cafe kind of a mess and while I don't feel in any way responsible for that, nor am I being blamed by anyone, I do feel kind of bad. Oddly, working a double has left me in a kind of zen place where I don't let work-related things affect me.
